I don’t think Sandy Lee, owner of Leckerlee had any idea that NYC had such a craving for lebkuchens. The traditional Christmas German gingerbread cookies debut this season at The Brooklyn Flea and ever since then people have been going crazy over them.
Thanks again to Sandy Lee for letting me hang out at her Lower East Side kitchen as she was busily making cookies. That night, randomly, a German guy walked into the kitchen wanting cookies! While living in Berlin, Sandy became obsessed with lebkuchen and decided to travel all over Germany to eat them all. Then she turned her obsession into a business and brought them to NYC.
If you need your lebkuchen, go check out the Leckerlee pop-up shop at 132 Orchard Str in the LES.
